Flagstaff Wants To Cut Down On Plastic Bags

A city committee is recommending that Flagstaff cut down on plastic bags and perhaps even charges for them in the next five years.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports that a citizens advisory committee told the city manager last week that plastic shopping bags should be reduced by a target percentage in the next five years.

The committee says the city should also implement an awareness campaign encouraging reusable bags and bag recycling drop-off sites.

According to the plan, a fee or ban on bags would be implemented to help lock in any improvements that came from businesses cutting down on bags.

The plan only affects plastic bags used at the point of sale, not dry cleaning or bulk produce bags.

The city has been concerned about plastic bag litter.
