Supporters of a ballot initiative to require background checks for private gun sales in Nevada say they have collected more than the 101,667 signatures required to have it put to a vote. If enough signatures are verified, the measure will be presented to the Legislature. If legislators don’t pass the measure, it would go on the 2016 election ballot for voters to decide.
The initiative says a person cannot sell a gun to someone without a background check, including private sales made online and at gun shows. The seller and buyer would provide their personal information to a licensed gun dealer, who would run it through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed a similar measure that passed in the 2013 Legislature. Republicans, who voted against the measure then, now have the majority in both houses of the state Legislature.
