California Condors Welcome New Arrival

A pair of California condors nesting in Zion National Park has produced a chick, the first one in the park.

The non-profit Peregrine Fund announced the birth and pointed to it as the first step in possibly having California condors re-establish themselves in southern Utah. The chick was spotted June 25 on the edge of a nest located in a cavity 1,000 feet up the wall of a remote canyon.  Biologists had suspected a chick was on the way after the pair of condors in the nesting area were seen acting as though they were caring for an egg.

A wildlife biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said the chick won’t be flying until November or December.
