State officials are closely watching a tiny critter slowly encroaching upon northern Nevada. It's called the Mormon Cricket and it has attacked parts of northern Nevada before. The last time was a decade ago. Nevada entomologists say the cricket is now 100 miles east of Reno.
The Mormon Cricket last infested northern Nevada between 2003 and 2008. But in 2005 residents saw the worst infestation as the critter covered 12-million acres of Nevada territory. The adults can grow as big as two inches. Droughts play a role in growth of the cricket population because mild winters allow for more cricket eggs to hatch.
