Viva Dot Vegas

Over the next year and a half, the international authority that's in change of Internet domains is going to be releasing 1,400 more domains. The familiar mainstays of .com, .org, .net, .gov or .edu will eventually become a drop in the bucket of domain choices.

Las Vegas is one of the first cities in the United States to win its own domain: .vegas. The only other cities with such top-level domains -- called TLD's in the industry -- are New York, Boston and Miami.

The .vegas domain is not yet active, and won't be until 2014. But people who want to acquire a premium .vegas address will need to gear up soon. An online auction will be held to sell the most desirable addresses. In auctions held for other Internet domains, some addresses have sold for as much as $11 million.
