Down and Derby with Rollergirl Alex Cohen

Strap on your skates and put in your mouthgard... it's roller derby time! The annual RollerCon conference brings derby teams to Las Vegas's fast tracks. So what happens when women with tattoos and '70s skates smash and tackle each other? What happens in the "Amazons v. Pygmies" game, or when youngsters take on seniors (the "Diapers v. Depends" game)? KPCC (and former "Day to Day" host) Alex Cohen tells us about her secret life as a rollergirl. We also check in with two members of the Fabulous Sin City Rollergirls (code names: "Ivanna Spanking" and "Rusty Kuntz"). What's the appeal of derby? Is it really like the movie "Whip It!"? And how does it change a woman's image? Let's get "down and derby" with State of Nevada!

The Roller Derby Convention (aka "RollerCon") skates into town July 28-August 1 at the Las Vegas Sports Center.

You won’t find a paywall here. Come as often as you like — we’re not counting. You’ve found a like-minded tribe that cherishes what a free press stands for.  If you can spend another couple of minutes making a pledge of as little as $5, you’ll feel like a superhero defending democracy for less than the cost of a month of Netflix.
