HCA Healthcare is officially cutting the ribbon on its Center for Clinical Advancement at Southern Hills Hospital on Tuesday, September 23. The facility will train current and future nurses on realistic, life-like medical manikins.

The 15,000 square foot simulation lab is home to around 13 such manikins, which simulate everything from strokes and seizures to childbirth and postpartum hemorrhage.

Todd Schoen is HCA’s division director for simulation and technology. He said the lab has already trained around 3,900 nurses since soft launching in April. After its grand opening, he expects that number to increase, and with it, nurses’ confidence for real emergency scenarios.

"Around 94% of people who come through training here feel more confident at the bedside when they're done," Schoen said, "which means less mistakes in the real world, less healthcare acquired infections. And there are studies to back all of that up."

HCA’s sim lab is not the only high-tech training facility in Las Vegas. UNLV’s School of Nursing and Nevada State University also run similar labs.
