SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — One person has been killed in a fire at an apartment complex in South Lake Tahoe.

Fire Chief Clive Savacool says firefighters saved the lives of several other residents, including some who were hanging out of second-story windows when crews arrived at the scene just after 11 a.m. Monday.

Six residents were rescued from the second floor and a seventh person escaped on his own from the first floor. Savacool says the fire could have been much worse.

The flames were confined to one of the four apartments in the complex just a few blocks west of the California-Nevada line between Lake Tahoe and the casino district.
