Las Vegas Mayor: 'Open Our City. Being Closed Is Killing Us'

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas' mayor says her city is withering with tourists staying home and conventions and businesses closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and needs to reopen before it dies.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman on Wednesday called a shutdown ordered by Gov. Steve Sisolak "total insanity."

Sisolak on Tuesday declared he's nowhere near reopening parts of the state's idled economy. Goodman says the number of people who have died statewide from the COVID-19 respiratory illness represents less than one-half of 1% of the state's more than 3 million people.

Yet, she says the entire state has been brought to its knees.

Sink your teeth into our annual collection of dining — and drinking — stories, including a tally of Sin City's Tiki bars, why good bread is having a moment, and how one award-winning chef is serving up Caribbean history lessons through steak.
