LAS VEGAS (AP) — A court battle has begun in Nevada over a proposal to amend the state constitution and reshape the way voting districts are drawn following the U.S. Census.
The head of the League of Women Voters of Nevada said Tuesday she's confident a ballot measure the organization wants to qualify for a statewide vote next November will withstand a lawsuit challenging it as inaccurate and misleading.
League President Sondra Cosgrove says backers expected political parties would try to change or effectively kill the idea of naming seven people to a non-partisan commission to redraw Nevada's voting maps.
The lawsuit filed Nov. 26 in Carson City says the idea won't work because there's no funding for it and commission members would still be partisan because they'd be appointed through the Legislature.
