RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada's Department of Motor Vehicles has broken ground on a new DMV center in south Reno that will replace the main one west of downtown that's served Reno-Sparks since 1979.

Gov. Brian Sandoval helped celebrate the ground-breaking Wednesday for the 54,000-square foot facility that will feature more service windows and a drive-up express kiosk when it's scheduled to open in late 2020.

It also will offer more than 450 parking spaces compared to the 160 currently available at the current office on Galletti Way that will close, as well as the Greg Street location in Sparks that handles commercial licenses.

The Nevada Legislature approved $42 million for the new building on the Double Diamond Parkway but it's expected to cost about $50 million due to inflation. The DMV already owned the land.
