🚗 If you are registering a vehicle in Nevada, the Department of Motor Vehicles wants you to go online, not get in line. As of now, all new registrations, registration renewals, titling and movement permits must be initiated online through MyDMV or DriveNV before visiting an office.
Director Tonya Laney says that while not every registration transaction can be completed online, most can be. The DMV says that since July, it has processed more than 192,000 vehicle transactions at its offices, most of which were registration renewals. Officials say ensuring customers can get critical services such as driver’s licenses and ID cards without delays is their top priority for in-person service.
🐶 Pit bulls and pit bull mixes make up many of the dogs that end up in shelters across the country, and they are the least likely to be adopted and the most likely to be euthanized. Thanks to a donor, Hearts Alive Village Clinic in Las Vegas is offering subsidized spay and neuter surgeries for those types of dogs to help limit accidental and unwanted litters, the Nevada Current reports.
The cost of spay and neuter surgeries, which generally depends on the dog’s weight, can run into the hundreds of dollars for pit bulls. In this case, owners pay between $66 and $116, based on the pet’s weight, for neuter surgery and between $81 and $151 for spay surgery.
🛒 Funding for Nevada’s administration of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food assistance for roughly half a million Nevadans, is set to run out on Nov. 1. Keeping the program running requires about $90 million a month, and Gov. Joe Lombardo’s office argues that creating a state-funded mechanism would require legislative approval.
The approval process would take months — too slow to continue administering the program — but the governor wrote that any state-sourced stopgap funding would not be reimbursed federally and that, therefore, a special legislative session would be necessary.
State Treasurer Zach Conine, however, is urgently advocating for “state-based solutions,” suggesting the state could tap into its Rainy Day Fund to find a creative way to continue benefits. He proposed using SNAP files to send out checks, but the idea was blocked by a state administration official citing potential violations of federal regulations — a ruling Conine and his legal contacts dispute.
Conine warned that the loss of benefits could immediately reduce the state’s economic output by $162 million.
🎄The 2025 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree has been selected and is being transported from the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Named Silver Belle, the tree is from Nevada and will kick off its cross-country road trip as part of Nevada Day festivities in Carson City on Nov. 1.
The Nevada Day Parade in Carson City will begin at 10 a.m., and residents will get to see the tree they’ve been making ornaments for. Carson City students have created thousands of ornaments to send along with the tree to the Capitol. Silver Belle will make its Las Vegas stop on Nov. 4.
