After years of saying it doesn’t have enough officers, Las Vegas Metro Police is closing in on its goal.
In a report to Metro’s Fiscal Affairs board next week, Sheriff Joe Lombardo said with 143 new recruits, plus more than 600 officers hired through the More Cops fund, Metro is just 25 officers short of the nearly 2,800 officers it feels it needs to patrol Las Vegas efficiently.
Police are also close to getting all of its untested rape kits tested.
In January 2015, Metro said nearly 7,700 sexual assault kits were untested.
That has since been whittled down to about 1,300.
Police will seek approval to outsource the testing of most of those kits, at $1,500.
The state of Nevada will reimburse the department an amount of no more than $2.7 million dollars.
