A Clark County District Court judge told at least two people during sentencing proceedings this summer if they adhered to their probation terms, they could be granted the right to vote again in time to vote for a second term for President Donald Trump.
The Nevada Independent says it obtained transcripts of Judge Susan Johnson making the remark to convicted felons in July, specifying Trump’s re-election in the suggestion that their voting rights could be restored before the 2020 election.
Several criminal defense attorneys told the Independent that either they or their colleagues have heard Johnson make similar statements in sentencing hearings.
Nevada law bars people convicted of a violent felony from voting without court permission.
The Nevada Judicial Code of Conduct prohibits judges from being influenced by political interests or relationships.
