Nye County has increased its budget for activities associated with Yucca Mountain.
The Pahrump Valley Times reports that according to the county’s financial records, this year’s budget has $60,000 in the administration department for a lobbying firm that represents the county in activities including Yucca Mountain.
The Nye County Planning Department will also get $20,000 for travel for Yucca Mountain projects, which will cover airfare and hotels for county employees who will travel to Washington, D.C. to represent the county in the matter.
Commission Chairman Dan Schinhofen said that he believes Yucca Mountain is safe to operate and construct. The timing of the budget increase comes on the heels of the Trump administration asking to allocate money to restart license proceedings for the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain.
