Bill Aims To Restore Civil Rights To Ex-Felons

A bill aimed at returning civil rights to ex-felons will get a second committee hearing Thursday.

The Nevada Independent reports Senate Bill 125 gives back the right to vote and serve on a jury to ex-offenders a year after being paroled or put on probation. The exceptions to the proposed new rule would be for people convicted of certain serious crimes like rape or murder.

The bill would make a rights-restoration process automatic. Currently, ex-felons who want to recover their voting rights and the right to serve on a jury restored must jump through several legal hoops, including having their records sealed in court.
