RENO, Nev. (AP) — A dozen Reno parks will be free of pesticides under a pilot program approved by the City Council.
The Reno Gazette-Journalreports the program adopted by the council Wednesday calls for the use of pesticides to be discontinued at Barbara Bennett, Canyon Creek, Virginia Lake and nine other city parks.
The city typically uses the weed killer Roundup at parks. Under the pilot program, city workers will use more labor intensive efforts to control weeds, including hand trimming and pulling. If pesticides are needed, workers will post signs warning of the chemicals.
The announcement of the program comes days after the arrest of a demonstrator who pretended to drink Roundup at a public meeting and caused an hourslong shutdown of the Washoe County Commission chambers.
