The death of a 4-year-old boy who police say had been left unattended in a stifling hot pickup truck on a 100-degree day illustrates one danger of intense summer temperatures in Las Vegas.

The Clark County Coroner says as of Aug. 20, the coroner says 44 people have died this year from causes listed as environmental exposure, heat stress or hyperthermia.

The coroner's office said 2013 was the worst year since 2005 for heat-related deaths in Las Vegas.
That year, Las Vegas baked for 15 days in late June and early July with daytime high temperatures averaging almost 111 degrees.
This year, the heat spell lasted 12 days, with the average temperature about 108.5 degrees.
