RENO (AP) — Water experts are working to make treated wastewater drinkable in Nevada.
KTVN-TV reports the Nevada Department of Environmental Protection and local water experts are drafting regulations for indirect potable recharge. The process pumps treated wastewater into the ground where it's filtered by natural processes, treated further and eventually can be used as drinking water.
California, Arizona, Colorado and Texas currently use indirect potable recharge.
Washoe County Director of Engineering and Capital Projects Dwayne Smith says increasing uses for treated wastewater reduces demand on potable water needed for cleaning, showering and cooking.
State lawmakers would need to approve regulations.
