MOUNT CHARLESTON, Nev. (AP) — Officials are marking both a local takeover of Mount Charleston fire protection from the Nevada Division of Forestry, and the second anniversary of a sweeping area wildfire.
Representatives of the new Mount Charleston Fire District are due to join Clark County Commission Vice Chairman Larry Brown for a Wednesday morning ceremony at the mountain's Fire Station 1.
The lightning-sparked Carpenter 1 fire blaze burned for more than three weeks in July 2013.
It charred almost 44 square miles of forest and forced evacuations of hundreds of mountain homes.
Two firefighters were hurt and six structures burned while more than 1,300 firefighters battled the fire about 25 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
A month later, thunderstorm runoff from scarred mountain areas flooded parts of northwest Las Vegas.
