CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Las Vegas is scheduled to receive a $3 million federal grant to fund counterterrorism efforts.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that the Las Vegas urban area would receive a $3 million grant as part of the department's Urban Area Security Initiative.
The grant is a $2 million bump from last year. The city was not included in the program in 2013.
Republican Sen. Dean Heller and Democratic Rep. Dina Titus released statements thanking the department and said past funding amounts ignored the millions of tourists and high-visibility potential targets in Las Vegas.
Nevada lawmakers including Sen. Harry Reid in the past have lobbied the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ask for additional counterterrorism funds. The region got more than $9 million in 2007.
