Southern Nevada’s famous desert tortoise Mojave Max, officially emerged from his burrow Thursday at 2:09 p.m.

The mascot for the Clark County Desert Conservation Program calls the Las Vegas Springs Preserve his home. And like other area reptiles, he enters a burrow to begin a form of hibernation every winter and emerges every spring.

Mojave Max’s appearance typically marks the beginning of spring-like weather in Southern Nevada, although this year, he set a new record for his latest emergence date.
