A fighter jet takes off from Nellis Air Force Base as a haze blankets the Las Vegas valley, Tuesday, July 31, 2018, in Las Vegas. Dense smoke from a series of wildfires burning in California has triggered air quality alerts across more than a 400-mile stretch of Nevada from Reno to Las Vegas.

SEPT. 12 (1:30 P.M.) — The Clark County Division of Air Quality issued another smoke alert for today and tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 13.

Smoke from the fires in Southern California is lingering in the valley. Plus, shifting wind is going to bring more smoke into the Las Vegas area by Friday.

The agency offers tips to limit exposure: Stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, limit outdoor exercise and consider changing your filters if they're dirty.

SEPT. 12 (8 A.M.) — Smoky air across the Las Vegas valley yesterday prompted the Clark County School District to cancel all non-essential outdoor activities, and some flights at Harry Reid were delayed due to poor visibility.

The smoke had drifted in from California, as firefighters there continue to battle three major wildfires in the mountains east of Los Angeles. Cooler weather did allow them to gain the upper hand against the blazes that have destroyed dozens of homes and forced thousands of people to evacuate.

The weather service said wildfire smoke will continue to linger in the Mojave and San Bernardino counties today, but the Las Vegas Valley will be clearer on Thursday. The air quality on Thursday at 8 a.m. was 81, or moderate.

KVVU-TV reported heavier smoke could return to the valley on Friday morning.

SEPT. 11 — Clark County issued a smoke alert for Las Vegas today, Sept. 11, due to wildfire smoke from three large Southern California blazes.

"Wildfire smoke is made of small particles and other pollutants that can aggravate respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and asthma or heart disease. Consult your physician if you have a medical condition that makes you sensitive to air quality conditions.

Under today’s conditions, it may be best for children, the elderly and people with respiratory and heart disease to stay indoors."

At the time of this post, the AQI in Las Vegas is 244, according to AirNow. Stay indoors if you can today, and if you have an air filter or purifier, today is the day to run it full blast.

There are three major fires burning near Los Angeles: The Bridge Fire (48,000 acres), the Line Fire (35,000 acres) and the Airport Fire (9,000 acres).
