Lawmakers advance bill to make Clark County property tax increase permanent

Associated Press

Lawmakers have advanced a bill to make a Clark County property tax increase permanent. Voters approved the proposal nearly 30 years ago.

The Senate approved SB451 by a 17-4 vote on Wednesday. It would prevent the 0.2% property tax assessment used to hire Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Deputies from ending next year.

Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro sponsored the legislation. She says Metro would have to make drastic cuts if the funding were to disappear.

“If you are the victim of a sexual assault, if you are the victim of an armed robbery,. If there is a shooting that happens, half of the available people who can respond to those sorts of situations would no longer be employed by the police department. They will not exist.”

Opponents say voters should approve changes to the tax policy.

The measure will now go to the Assembly. If approved, it will then head to Republican Governor Joe Lombardo.
