🅿️ The price of parking at Harry Reid International Airport is going up. Starting next Wednesday, July 1st, the airport will increase fees for all parking options by either one or two dollars.

That’s according to airport officials who announced the change yesterday, June 22. It’s the first time officials have adjusted parking prices at the airport in more than seven years. They say the money will help support growth and modernization efforts.

🔥 Interagency wildland firefighters are battling two major wildfires south of Caliente in Lincoln County, Nevada. The Kane Springs Fire has burned almost 15-thousand acres. Crews have achieved 25 percent containment on this specific fire. It continues to burn through short grass, brush, and pinyon-juniper fuels. Firefighters are using existing roads and dozer lines to build containment features. The Grapevine Fire has also burned just shy of 15-thousand acres, east of the other one.

This second fire currently has zero percent containment. The blaze is burning in steep timber terrain within the Clover Mountain Wilderness Area. Firefighters successfully finished a burnout operation along the northwestern edge Sunday night. This operation helped secure the fire perimeter within established control lines. Hot weather, low humidity, and afternoon winds continue to drive active fire behavior across both incidents.

🏀 Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley is officially looking to bring an NBA team to Las Vegas. He said in a statement yesterday that he has retained Morgan Stanley to help build an ownership group. This follows the NBA’s announcement earlier this year that it’s exploring expansion in Las Vegas and Seattle. The expansion fee for a franchise is expected to be 7 to 10 billion dollars.

That money will be shared among current owners. Besides the Golden Knights, Foley owns the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL, the Vegas Knight Hawks of the Indoor Football League, English soccer club AFC Bournemouth and New Zealand soccer club Auckland FC.

🌟 You know the story. A Las Vegas local with stars in his eyes dreams of a more glamorous life in Los Angeles. He packs up the car and heads 280 miles west. Ben is no different. And it’s Hollywood stars he’s got his sights set — and camera — on. He wants to join the paparazzi. But a career pivot quickly turns into an obsession that threatens to rip everything from him — including his sanity.

Close Relationships with Strangers, out June 23 on large publishing house Simon & Schuster, is a book that's set in — and connects — Las Vegas and Los Angeles. It’s the debut novel by Las Vegas-based writer Krista Diamond, a contributor to KNPR's Desert Companion magazine, as well as The New York Times and other outlets. Diamond began writing another novel while attending UNLV, but her obsessions with famous people and the outdoors soon compelled her to write a whole other book.

Her mentor, novelist and UNLV associate professor Maile Chapman, encouraged her to harness that enthusiasm and finish the latter story. With those two themes, it became clear to her where the book needed to be set. Hear the full conversation with KNPR's Mike Prevatt here.

🎼 A word keeps coming up in conversations about the Las Vegas Men’s Chorus: love. It’s implied by the six guiding principles of the group, founded in 1993: community, harmony, opportunity, respect, unity, and service. The chorus’ concerts are full of energy and effervescence — but are also emotionally powerful. “You’re going to walk away feeling something. The love is palpable,” LVMC Artistic Director Ryan Duff says.

Musical achievement is just one goal of the Las Vegas Men’s Chorus

In his 13 years as AD, Duff has cultivated the organization’s growth from about 10 members to more than 100. Today, he says, the major problem is that LVMC has outgrown most of the performance spaces available to it. UNLV’s Ham Concert Hall and The Smith Center are two of the few places that can accommodate 100 performers onstage.

His dream is twofold: their own rehearsal space and an organizational budget allowing him to transition to full time and hire an executive director. The board of directors is working on these challenges. Read the full story in Desert Companion's summer issue, or find it here.
