How Will Recent Changes in U.S. Public Lands Affect Nevada?

In late March, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted along party lines to advance President Trump's pick, former New Mexico Congressman Steve Pearce, to the full Senate. NPR's Western Correspondent Kirk Siegler says Pearce — a former New Mexico GOP chairman who spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election — has drawn controversy, though he has since distanced himself from some of that activism.

Potentially more consequential, Siegler says, is a U.S. Department of Agriculture plan to relocate the U.S. Forest Service headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Salt Lake City this summer. He told State of Nevada the move hasn't been fully explained to the public and is raising concerns ahead of wildfire season. Utah has forests, Siegler notes, but not the volume of West Coast states — leading some to view the relocation as a political nod to the GOP base and to Utah Sen. Mike Lee's ongoing push to secure public land.

The Amargosa River is one of America's 10 most endangered rivers, according to the nonprofit American Rivers.

Expansion of mining is the major threat to the desert waterway, the group says. The river flows from outside Beatty into Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, with much of its 185 miles underground. Along the way, it nourishes a host of plants and animals, according to American Rivers, and they would be left high and dry once miners start drilling underground. Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, with its Devils Hole pupfish, would be among the fragile habitats impacted. The group is calling for a ban on mining in the river's watershed. The river is already protected in California after being designated a wild and scenic river by the federal government.

Can a diverse coalition of locals, working with the federal government, stop lithium drilling in the Amargosa Valley before it permanently alters Ash Meadows? It’s a long shot they’re willing to take

Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center is now considered a Level One Trauma Center by the state of Nevada.

That designation goes to the highest-level hospitals, which provide 24/7 comprehensive and specialized care for severe or complex injuries. In a news release, the hospital says the designation reflects what it calls Sunrise's unwavering commitment to delivering the highest level of trauma care and advancing medical excellence across Nevada. The hospital's CEO said the designation will help Sunrise train and attract top-tier physicians and engage in trauma research. Hospitals receive the designation after meeting rigorous standards, established by state and national accrediting bodies, that prove the facility is equipped to deliver comprehensive, quality care to patients. Sunrise received its Level II trauma designation in 2005. The 834-bed facility is Nevada's largest acute care center.

Identifying and eliminating invasive species in Lake Tahoe is an ongoing concern.

Just out to help in the fight is the "Aquatic Invasive Species Video Identification Toolkit" from Clean Up the Lake. The aim is to make species identification more accurate and accessible to a wide audience, said Colin West, CEO of the nonprofit. He told Reno's KUNR Public Radio the new video is a vast improvement over what is currently available. Phase one of the project has footage of 11 species. Plans are to add more next year.
