Winter watering takes effect, Cybertruck police fleet to deploy, and Las Vegas teams stumble

SNWA’s winter watering schedule takes effect. Meanwhile, police Cybertrucks hit Las Vegas roads in November, and Las Vegas teams have a tough outing over the weekend.

🚰 The Southern Nevada Water Authority’s winter watering schedule is now in effect, limiting residents and businesses to landscape watering on one assigned day per week based on address. The schedule runs through Feb. 28. As usual, no sprinkler watering is allowed on Sundays.

The authority recommends using drip irrigation systems to water plants and trees once every seven to 14 days for 30 to 90 minutes to prevent overwatering, noting that trees and plants need less water than grass during cooler months. When temperatures are especially low, sprinkler or spray systems should run during midmorning hours to help prevent freezing and ice formation on lawns and sidewalks.

🚨 “Welcome to the future of policing,” Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a recent press conference, surrounded by the Cybertrucks while drones hovered overhead and a police helicopter circled above him. Thanks to a donation from a U.S. tech billionaire, the nation’s largest police fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks is set to begin patrolling Las Vegas streets in November, raising concerns about the blurring of lines between public and private interests. The fleet of 10 black-and-white Cybertrucks of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department with flashing lights and sirens are wrapped with the police department’s logo. About 400 officers have been trained to operate the trucks that will use public charging stations. Read the full story here.

🐕‍🦺 The Animal Foundation is reminding residents affected by the federal government shutdown that help is available to keep their pets fed and healthy. The shelter’s food pantry provides basic supplies so owners don’t have to consider surrendering their pets, along with other assistance programs. Food and supplies are donated by local and national businesses as well as community members. The shelter has operated at or over capacity all year, so keeping dogs at home helps both the community and the foundation. Fostering or adopting — especially larger dogs — creates space for others in need. The Nevada SPCA also offers programs to help keep pets in their homes.

🔻Las Vegas teams had a tough weekend, with losses across the board — the Golden Knights on Friday, the Rebels on Saturday, and the Raiders on Sunday. The Golden Knights suffered only their second non-overtime loss of the season, falling to the Colorado Avalanche, which allowed the Anaheim Ducks to take over the top spot in the Pacific Division standings.

The Rebels, led by a reportedly flu-ridden quarterback, Anthony Coleandrea, lost a 40–35 battle to the New Mexico Lobos despite a strong offensive showing. The Raiders’ loss was perhaps the most heartbreaking: a two-point conversion attempt for the win in overtime looked perfect until Geno Smith’s pass to Tyler Lockett was swatted down at the line of scrimmage. The Raiders remain near the bottom of the AFC West standings.

🧗 Kai Whaley is one of the world's strongest boulderers. He doesn't boast of being such, but he is by virtue of being the youngest to climb a V16 graded boulder named Sleepwalker in Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area. The hardest routes in the world are one grade higher, V17, and he's close to climbing Return of the Sleepwalker, which adds a few more moves to earn the grade. Hear host Xander Pippin interview Whaley, endeavoring to share some insights into working toward such difficult goals.
