UNLV football coach Tim Hauck, who recently forbid his players to have Twitter accounts, might do well to read this article from a social media visionary. No, it's not Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook or Twitter's Evan Williams. It's Admiral Gary Roughead, chief of Navy operations.
We made the decision to engage in social media, as many of your own organizations did, when we recognized that whether we participated or not, there was going to be an ongoing conversation about the Navy and we were not content to be absent from that conversation. So we joined that conversation, and the term that I’ve used is, “we’re burning the boats.” There’s no going back. We’re committed irreversibly, and in the end it was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made as the Chief of Naval Operations.
