New CCSD Contest Asks Kids to Think About Conservation

Schools all over Clark County are initiating a contest later this month asking kids to come up with unique solutions to energy and water conservation issues.

The “Think Clean and Green” contest is co-sponsored by the Clark County School District and Yes Air Conditioning and Plumbing.

The prize is a bundle of cash.

Lance Fernandez, the general manager of Yes! Air Conditioning and Plumbing, told KNPR's State of Nevada that this is the third year of the contest.

He said the students aren't directed to focus on one aspect of conservation.

"Anything you could come up with to conserve energy, however they want to put it together, or conserve water, however they want to put it together," he said. "That's up to them, wherever their mind takes them."

Cheryl Wagner is the STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math, partnership coordinator for the school district.

She said information about the contest is sent out to all teachers and schools. Each teacher and school can decide how to best use it.

"It gives the students an opportunity outside what their teachers have planned for them, outside what their school and the Nevada academic standards have," she said.

Fernandez said students have come up with ideas ranging from how to improve conservation in hotels to cleaning the oceans.

Winners get $200 for higher grades and $150 for elementary students.
