Art has the ability to stretch across cultures, connecting us to one another, our ancestors, and even our unique heritages.

That was part of the appeal for local mixed media artist Haide Calle. Her mission is driven by a desire to affirm her Indigenous and immigrant identity, while helping others do the same. In this episode, Nevada Public Radio’s Heidi Kyser talks with Calle about her art, creative process, and inspiration. Calle is part of Desert Companion’s Ones to Watch series, which profiles up-and-coming artists and entertainers in Las Vegas.

Beneath the soft exterior, there’s a pointed complexity to her mixed-media creations

Desert Companion welcomed Heidi Kyser as staff writer in January 2014. In 2024, Heidi was promoted to managing editor, charged with overseeing the Desert Companion and State of Nevada newsrooms.
