On February 12, 2009, Nevada and the world commemorate Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial. But a couple of other presidents are having bicentennials this year, less eminent than Lincoln, but with their own Nevada connections.
One of them was Lincoln's successor, Andrew Johnson, born December 29, 1808, about six weeks before Lincoln.
However, he did not share the same ideals as Lincoln. In February 1868, the House passed eleven articles of impeachment against him for fighting civil rights legislation and for illegally removing his Secretary of War. Two of the 35 senators who voted to convict him were Nevadans, William Stewart and James Nye.
