What's happening in Nevada sports right now

UNLV quarterback Jayden Maiava (1) throws down field against Kansas during the first half of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl NCAA college football game Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023, in Phoenix.

Maybe the biggest story in Nevada sports right now concerns a college football team that has been pretty bad for decades, longer than the average Nevadan has been alive.

And, the UNLV Rebels football team hadn’t been ranked in a national poll for 48 years. But after beating another good football team in Kansas and winning their first three games, USA Today’s poll this week put them in the top 25.

It’s something very few people expected; just a few years ago, some were saying it might be best if the school got out of football altogether, to save some money.

So, what’s changed?
