If you’re undocumented, the path to permanent residency in the United States can be long, arduous, even impossible.
Depending on your case, you might be required to leave the U.S. and live in your country of origin for years, not knowing whether you’ll be allowed to come back.
Some people give it a shot. Others stay in the shadows and in limbo, not wanting to be separated from their families and the country they call home.
A major way people try to obtain permanent residency is through marriage.
And last month, President Joe Biden issued an executive order that speeds up the residency process for certain undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens. Additionally, people who qualify for the program would no longer be required to leave the country.
The order could affect more than half a million people nationally and an estimated 10,000 in Nevada, according to the UNLV Immigration Clinic.
What are the requirements to apply? And how much of an impact could this have on undocumented Nevadans?
