Fireworks explode over the Las Vegas Strip during a New Year's Eve celebration Monday, Jan. 1, 2024, in Las Vegas.

The year of 2023 is now behind us. Is there any part of it you wish you could bring back? Glad it’s behind us?

There was good in the sports world: the Stanley Cup for the Golden Knights, the second WNBA Championship for the Las Vegas Aces.

There were minimal political races so not a lot of negative ads. That’s to come this year. Were you hoping for different presidential candidates? What about our state representatives?

Did you appreciate the bills that passed in the Nevada Legislature? You know, $380 million in public support for the Oakland Athletics, the teachers pay bill — which was held up by four months of arbitration.

They keep building and opening casinos. Fontainebleau, a $10 billion development on the north Strip; Durango just opened in the southwest valley with more coming from Station Casinos. But we know some other, newer casinos aren’t doing well on the Strip. Is the market big enough?

Then again, we had Formula 1, a big event for casinos, if not so pleasant for locals. We have the Super Bowl in February, and there’s very good argument for it to be here at least every other year. What do you think?

Guest: Tick Segerblom, commissioner, Clark County
