The electronic devices that give students instant access to the world for educational purposes are also their conduit to social media, which can also open them up to cyber bullying. It is a problem for school administrators.
Probably every school district in Nevada has dealt with discipline issues, including bullying, that started on social media.
The Clark County School District suspended or expelled more than 1,700 students for bullying or intimidation during the last school year. That is almost a 10 percent increase from the previous year.
Unless prompted by a threat, however, school administrators do not monitor what students do on social media, when they are away from school.
So, how do principals in Clark County handle online threats? And would extra monitoring prevent problems, including online bullying of students?
