To most people, a legal brief can seem like pages of technical argument and case citations. But the very best, argues Linda Edwards, tell a real good story. That's what she teaches students at UNLV's Boyd School of Law. Without a such a strong narrative, the best cases are unlikely to persuade a bench of appeals judges to make a difficult decision. And some of the most famous cases such as the Miranda v. Arizona decision that made police warn suspects they had right to remain silent had a great story line.
Edwards joins us to talk about how important the tale is in winning a case.
