The Nevada Legislature missed its deadline, forcing a mini special session to wrap up leftover state business. Some critics point to the lack of experience of the current class of lawmakers as the cause for the extension. Whatever the reason, according to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the additional time spent in session will cost taxpayers around $25,000.
The legislature had already covered guns, education and other major issues. “There was nothing left except some special interest legislation,” says Jon Ralston.
Specifically they worked to pass an increase in taxes to hire new cops, legislation that Ralston says had bipartisan support – so it was especially bewildering that they weren’t able to cross that item off the agenda.
“You just had leaders who did not plan,” says Ralston. “They didn’t plan very well.”
