"What is rape?" Mary-Ann Tirone Smith asked her father when he walked through the door. She was in grade school. She had just read an article about a man who assaulted and murdered her 11-year-old friend. Her father sent her to her room and refused to talk about it. Children were locked inside their homes, and police scoured the town for the perpetrator.
