Abbot Nutrition, which produces the majority of baby formula for the country, has reopened, but supplies won’t reach shelves for several more weeks.
"Operation Fly Formula,” which is the administration’s effort to import formula from other countries, is helping to stock shelves, but the crisis remains.
Locally, the group Help of Southern Nevada is trying to help.
Romeo and Mia Almadena have been searching for formula for their 11-month-old son, Reno. Romeo Almadena said the shortage has been challenging.
"We’ve been searching everywhere, even in Canada, to try to get something delivered to us," he said.
Government Planet donated pallets of infant and toddler formula to a giveaway event this past weekend. Help of Southern Nevada also provided diapers, wipes and socks.
Abby Quinn, chief community relations officer for the nonprofit, said supporting the community is important.
"It’s our duty as Help of Southern Nevada to get out there for the people who can’t do this for themselves. And if we get a donation, all the better," Quinn said.
Sabrina Bistol said she felt compelled to volunteer because she is an expecting mom. "Big blessing for me," she said.
Parents only needed an I.D. for themselves and their child to pick up the donations. For those who were not able to make it to their drive-thru event, parents can still go in person to Help of Southern Nevada during the week.
