Gun, Criminal Justice, Voting Bills Remain As Legislature Nears End

Thorny issues remain as the Nevada Legislature marches toward adjournment.

With the session expected to end next week, lawmakers are grappling with bills to prohibit driver license suspensions over unpaid traffic fines, bar guns from casinos, and make mail-in voting permanent.

Senate Bill 219 would remove courts’ ability to suspend a driver’s license over unpaid traffic fines.

The measure “works hand in hand with a bill to decriminalize minor traffic violations, too,” said Nevada Public Radio legislative reporter Bert Johnson.

Backers of the legislation say taking someone’s license makes it less like the fines will ever be repaid.

The 81st session of the Legislature is scheduled to end on Monday.
