State Unemployment Office Hiring Workers To Deal With Backlog

Nevada’s unemployment office has hired 200 part-time workers to help with a backlog of jobless claims caused by tied pandemic-related closures.

Governor Steve Sisolak announced the hiring plan this week. He said another 200 positions would be available if needed.

Some retired state employees are being rehired to help, the governor said.

He admitted again the unemployment system was ill-equipped to handle the avalanche of unemployment claims starting in March, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

Ongoing claims for unemployment insurance in Nevada in late August dropped to their lowest level since the early weeks of the state’s shutdown. However, more people filed for extended benefits as their regular unemployment benefits ran out.
