Magnitude 5.8 Earthquake Shakes Remote Central California

RIDGECREST, Calif. (AP) — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has struck a remote area of central California.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday and was centered in the Owens Valley region below the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada.

The quake was felt widely, including about 240 miles away in Sacramento. Veteran seismologist Lucy Jones says the quake occurred in the same location as a magnitude-4.6 quake that hit on Monday night.
