Tarkanian Wins Tight Race For Rural Nevada Seat

GARDNERVILLE RANCHOS, Nev. (AP) — After seven attempts to win public office, Danny Tarkanian is finally a winner — pending a recount his opponent vows to request.

The final vote count published by the county recorder Wednesday showed the son of the late UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian ahead of incumbent commissioner Dave Nelson by 17 votes in rural northern Nevada.

Following four runs for U.S. Congress, Tarkanian moved to Gardnerville from Las Vegas. He ran along with a pro-development slate of commission candidates and faced attacks for his lack of local ties.
