Officials: Earthquake Causes Minor Damage Near Carson City

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Authorities in Nevada say a 4.5 magnitude earthquake near Carson City on Friday night caused minor damages across the city.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says some damage to items on shelves inside stores was reported and one building shut off its gas as a precaution.

Experts say the temblor was originally reported as a magnitude 5, and caused about two dozen ongoing smaller aftershocks.

It is unclear exactly what fault the temblor occurred on. Scientists record up to 15,000 earthquakes a year in Nevada, the third-most seismically active state in the nation.
