The Clark County Education Association has endorsed Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders ahead of the Nevada Democratic caucuses next month.
The union representing more than 19,000 local teachers is the largest independent teaching union in the country.
Union President Vikki Courtney said in a statement released by Sanders’ campaign that the Senator had what she called a “stellar record” of supporting educators.
She told the Las Vegas Review-Journal the union’s executive board interviewed several candidates and conducted a straw poll of registered Democrats within its membership.
She noted that the endorsement applies to the February 22 caucus only and that the endorsement process for the general election will include all union members, regardless of party registration.
The union has supported candidates in both major parties.
