A teenage boy. The girl he’s crushing on. Bullies he must avoid. Ghosts only he can see. Sounds like your typical young-adult paranormal novel, right?
But Alex McKenna & The Geranium Deaths is anything but conventional. Its namesake protagonist is a transgender male, which is hardly the hero archetype for teen novels.
“I haven’t seen anything out there where the lead character is transgender, and the focus is not on the transgender,” Las Vegas-based author Vicki-Ann Bush told State of Nevada.
Instead, the plot revolves around the titular Alex and his abilities to communicate with the departed.
