State Calls Halt To New Water Wells In Reno-Area Community

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada’s top water official is halting new drilling permits in a fast-growing community north of Reno.

State Engineer Tim Wilson cites fears the only water source for thousands of homes that rely solely on groundwater in the Cold Spring area could run dry.

Wilson calls Nevada the driest and fastest-growing state in the nation, and says it's entering a new era of water management.

An aide calls the order just the second of its kind issued by the state.

Last May, Wilson imposed a moratorium on new water developments in a remote desert area northeast of Las Vegas.
