Bye-Bye Coach? And Hello Running Rebels?

UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez looks on in the second half of an NCAA college football game against Colorado State, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, in Fort Collins, Colo. Colorado State won 37-17.

Despite his stellar record as a high school coach, Tony Sanchez has not done it at UNLV.

Is it all over for Sanchez at UNLV, or is this even a coaching issue?

“I like Tony Sanchez. In full disclosure, I don’t cover the team anymore. I used to. I did the 'Coach’s Show' a couple of times, filled in, talked to about it here locally a lot, went to the games, I don’t do that anymore, but I rely and I talk to and I trust a lot of people who are still kind of close to the program and they told me weeks ago, it’s a matter of time. He’s done,” said Mitch Moss, the host of "Follow the Money" on V-SIN, the Vegas Stats and Information Network.

Moss noted that Sanchez has had five years to turn the program around, which he hasn't been able to do. Plus, the team has racked up some embarrassing losses over the years.

The question for many fans is what will it take to get a winning season? Moss thinks it is really about getting the right person and that will take money.

“Who would not want to live in Las Vegas?  With everything that’s going on in this city. They could get big names but the money just hasn’t been there,” he said.

Moss suggested someone like Jim Mora, the former coach at UCLA, would be the type of big-name coach that could bring in top talent and turn the program around.

Runnin' Rebels

The Runnin' Rebels got their first W of the pre-season with a win against the Fort Wayne Mastodons. Does that mean new Head Coach  T.J. Otzelberger is turning the program around?

“I have no idea what to expect in year one, but he was really good at his previous spot," Moss said, "So, two or three years down the road, I think he could do really good things here.”

Moss said that Otzelberger needs some time to get his program established.

“What also is concerning to me is the fact that they’re blowing two-goal leads that can’t happen. You’ve got to maintain these games in which you’re leading three-one or whatever the score is. You can’t blow those games,” Moss said.

He said it hasn't been a great stretch for the team but "I'll still tell you that they’re probably going to make the playoffs rather comfortably.”

Moss said he wouldn't be surprised if the front office makes a move to improve the team's defense.

Very Early Super Bowl Predictions

“I actually think the best team in football is New Orleans.”

Besides the Saints, Moss said if you want a midshot to put $10 on: Try Philadelphia. He notes their schedule is easy and he believes they'll win the NFC East.

He has less confidence in who to pick in the AFC.
