Fatal Falllon Crash Sparks Fire, Power Outage, Closes US 50

FALLON, Nev. (AP) — One person was killed and another seriously injured when three vehicles collided in Fallon, sparking a fire at a damaged gas line and shutting down part of U.S. Highway 50 about 60 miles east of Reno.

The Nevada Highway Patrol said the highway was expected to remain closed in both directions into Tuesday evening as a result of the crash on US-50 near Sheckler Road a mile west of Fallon.

Authorities said the gas line was shut off and the fire was under control, but downed power lines created a power outage affecting about 2,000 residents.

The patrol originally reported one of the vehicles was a propane truck that exploded shortly after 8 a.m., but later said the damaged gas main lit the fire.

One person died. Another was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
