Gov. Sisolak Holds Talks With Superintendent, Union Leaders Over Teacher Dispute

Governor Steve Sisolak, along with other legislative leaders, sat down with Clark County School District Superintendent Jesus Jara and Clark County Education Association Executive Director John Vellardita to talk about solutions to contract issues.

The CCEA has said it will strike September 10, if contract negotiations are not worked out by Friday.

One of the main sticking points is raises for teachers who have gone through extra education and training.

It is illegal for teachers to strike in Nevada. The union could be fined and teachers could be terminated, although Superintendent Jara told KNPR's State of Nevada he would hate to do that.

During Wednesday's meeting, Sisolak, Speaker Jason Frierson and Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro urged the two sides to come to an agreement and honor the negotiation process laid out in union contracts.
